Individual Therapy
Take the First Step Towards Well-being
Have You Been Recently Diagnosed as Autistic as an adult or Do You Think That You Might Have Autism?
I work with people who have been recently diagnosed or have begun to suspect that they might be Autistic. You might be seeking help today because you are struggling in your relationships mostly at home but also at work. Throughout most of your life, you may have struggled with extreme shyness, increased stress in social settings, and difficulty connecting with the people around you. You might have a preference for sameness and have difficulty transitioning away from the way that you expected things to be. Sometimes you find yourself getting overwhelmed or stressed when things are too busy around you, or there is loud noise or bright lights, or even when there are certain smells. When things are too much either internally or externally you find yourself lashing out or shutting down. You don’t always understand why.
Suspected Diagnosis of Autism as an Adult
You have this new diagnosis or at least this new suspect that you might be Autistic. The idea that you always hide or ignore your gut, because you know that someone will reject you or judge you or that it might just make another relationship harder, makes a lot more sense. But if you really look at it there are a lot of feelings around this as well. Sadness that you have always had to hide the real you and anger at how the people around you have responded to who you really are. You wonder if the stress that you have in your life might be lower if you figured out how to be you authentically. If you stopped worrying about how it impacts the people around you. But you’ve been doing this so long that you don’t really know how to not do it. There is grief around all of the self-blame and knowing now that this isn’t your fault. That your brain just works differently and doesn’t necessarily fit in with the rest of the world.
